Another year gone by, another tracking of books and movies and such for the year. I know I missed a lot of graphic novels when you count the collected editions (since I read a fair number for review purposes in serialized formats), as well as for the various zines I’ve read. I’d said that in 2014 that it was a hectic year in terms of school and tracking fell to the wayside a bit. That was not only true for 2015, but also for reading and seeing films in general. Ah well! Hopefully 2016 will be more productive.

Did you like The Danish Girl?
The cinematography is AMAZING. And Eddie Redmayne is definitely going to get an Oscar nomination and does a very good job. The storytelling is just so-so. It’s a bit overwrought in places and tries too hard to be “dramatic.”
I completely agree–I found the screenplay and the direction formulaic and melodramatic. The earnest tragedy of it all felt really awkward, like the people who made it were really wary of overstepping some imaginary elderly audience member’s comfort level with the subject matter–as though depictions of transgender issues have to be stuck at the “noble and doomed” stage we were at with sympathetic depictions of gay folks 30-40 years ago.
But the production design, shooting locations, costume designs, etc., were gorgeous. I actually recognized a couple of the interiors as practical locations that were designed by the Belgian Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta. http://whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=31&l=en&id_site=1005&gallery=1&&maxrows=18
